The project includes “The Rebirth of Venus”, an exhibition by Sarka Darton and a conference led by Dr Irene Salvo, titled "Reimagining Womanhood: Exploring the Intersection of Body, Identity, and Representation." The conference is designed to explore and expand upon the themes and ideas presented in the exhibition.
The project aims to promote understanding and awareness of the experiences of women and to encourage a more inclusive and equitable society.
“The Rebirth of Venus” is a body of work that has been developed over the past fifteen years by artist Sarka Darton. It is a multifaceted narrative that explores the role of women in society and the perception of the female body throughout history. The show is designed to respond to the environment in which it is presented, sometimes using projections and images printed on walls to create a combination of permanent and transient imagery that incorporates the viewer's shadows.
The show takes inspiration from Franz Kafka's "Metamorphoses" and playfully describes the changes in the perception of female beauty from the figure of Palaeolithic Venus to a modern, independent female athlete.
The project's inclusion of the conference provides a space for in-depth discussion and exploration of the complex themes and ideas presented in the exhibition. Through these conferences, the project aims to foster critical thinking, spark meaningful conversations, and provide a platform for diverse voices to be heard.
