Refuge VR is an interactive and immersive exhibition experience in response to the migrant crisis, from Carl Guyenette, the award-winning director and technologist of The War of the Worlds.
Refuge is an emotionally documentative virtual reality experience shot in Lesvos during November 2015, using only the communication of experiential VR and music to give a message of hope. It's constructed with the sights, sounds and emotions the artists experienced there, creating a form dubbed emotional experiential journalism. The artists wanted to give people the experiences and thoughts that they felt in Lesvos but without using speech or text, as the complex emotions transcend these communication methods of our minds. It is a message of hope; rather than the message of guilt, shame or sorrow that are so often felt with the media reports of this situation. Pure and beautiful altruistic humanity is currently resonating throughout the island of Lesvos; this piece is an attempt to capture this essence.
