The Artists' Sanctuary Programme is We Restart's flagship initiative supporting displaced artists to rebuild their creative practice, professional careers and sense of belonging through the arts. Born from the success of the Secret Art Campaign in 2022, the programme was created in response to the growing number of artists forced to flee conflict, persecution, political instability and humanitarian crises. Initially supporting Ukrainian artists who had sought refuge in the UK by providing essential art materials, musical instruments and professional connections, the initiative quickly demonstrated that artists need far more than emergency assistance—they need the opportunity to continue creating, developing and contributing to society.

Today, the Artists' Sanctuary Programme provides long-term, tailored support to artists rebuilding their lives in the UK. We work with visual artists, musicians, performers, writers, filmmakers, designers and creatives from diverse backgrounds who have experienced displacement and whose artistic careers have been interrupted by circumstances beyond their control. Rather than defining artists by their migration status, we recognise their creativity, experience and cultural knowledge as invaluable assets that enrich the UK's artistic landscape.

The programme combines practical support with professional development, offering access to creative workspaces, materials and equipment, mentoring, networking opportunities, exhibitions, performances, residencies, commissions and collaborations with leading cultural organisations. Through one-to-one guidance and peer support, artists are encouraged to rebuild confidence, expand professional networks, develop new skills and reconnect with their artistic identity while navigating life in a new country. Wherever possible, participants are introduced to galleries, festivals, museums, universities, community organisations and creative industries, helping them establish sustainable careers and meaningful connections within the UK's cultural sector.

At the heart of the Artists' Sanctuary Programme is the belief that creativity should never be displaced. Artistic practice is more than a profession—it is a source of identity, resilience, wellbeing and cultural memory.
